Director of Freedom for Animals
Office based, Manchester City Centre
Initially a fixed term 6 month contract
37.5hrs a week
c£23k dependent on experience

An exciting opportunity has come up to take a leadership role within our charity. Freedom for Animals began as Captive Animals' Protection Society in 1957 and is one of the UK’s longest-running charities working to protect animals. Through a combination of undercover investigations, research, campaigns, grassroots activism, political lobbying and education, our work for animals focuses predominantly on issues affecting those individuals held captive in circuses, zoos and aquariums, as well as those used in the television and film industry, live animal displays and the exotic pet trade.

We take action to end the captivity of animals, especially those used for entertaining the public in zoos, circuses and the media industry. We work to influence policymakers at the highest level whilst supporting grassroots activism which we believe is the very foundation of Freedom for Animals. We were delighted this year when, after decades of campaigning, the government recently passed legislation to ban the use of wild animals in circuses.

The Director will provide comprehensive leadership support to all the charities activities and oversee the smooth running and overall management of the organisation. The work will include developing and implementing organisational plans and financial strategies, managing members of staff, liaising with the Trustee Board and running the day to day work of the charity. Therefore, we are looking for someone who is competent with people management, has good organisational skills and is able to facilitate good team working. Some basic level of finance knowledge is ideal but the Board will provide extra support in this area.

Some previous campaigning experience is essential as the role will involve leading and promoting our campaigns.  The work will include speaking to the press, co-ordinating staff and volunteers, dealing with legal aspects, producing literature and promotional material, carrying out research, and managing budgets.

We are looking for someone to lead our work with a strong sense of passion and commitment to take the charity’s vision forward in a pragmatic and effective way.

Initially a fixed-term 6 month contract.
