How did you come up with the new logo? Expand Elephants are one of the most iconic animals in anti-captivity campaigning. They have been a part of our logo for almost 40 years. Their strong family bonds, their expression of love and grief, make them one of the best loved animals and one we as humans can relate to. Sadly, they are also a tragic symbol of circus cruelty and they are one of the animals to suffer the most in captive environments such as zoos. We wanted our new logo to reflect the history of CAPS yet give a positive message. We feel this playful elephant, holding a branch to symbolise their freedom in the wild, does just that.
How did you come up with the new name? Expand We reached out to our supporters and asked for feedback and ideas on coming up with a new name. This input led us to choose the name ‘Freedom for Animals’. It sums up perfectly what we are about, creating a world where animals are free from the pain, suffering and loneliness of captivity. Where animals are free to live as they should.
Why did you change your name? Expand For 60 years we have been known as the Captive Animals’ Protection Society, a name that was chosen by our founder Irene Heaton. Over that time we have stayed true to the principles we were set up with, working at a grassroots level and having a strong animal rights ethic. Over that time we have also grown to work on more campaigns and influence laws to protect animals. For our supporters who have been with us for many years you will know everything about CAPS and more importantly, the issues affecting the animals that we fight for. But for some people who are new to the world of animal protection, it has been confusing for them to understand what it is that we do as an organisation and what our ultimate goal is. This has meant we have not reached people in the way we need to, to be able to achieve even more for animals. So, we felt we needed a new name which explains more clearly what we do as an organisation and inspires people to get active for animals. What could be more inspiring than fighting for ‘Freedom for Animals’?
