Freedom Can't Wait Summer Appeal

Help stop another family being torn apart

Send your gift to our Freedom Can’t Wait Summer Appeal by 14th August!

Mujur should have spent her life high in the rainforest canopy, raising her babies among the trees. Instead, this intelligent, sensitive orangutan has spent every one of her 21 years behind the walls of Dublin Zoo.

Mujur gave birth for the first time in 2019, but tragically her baby died. She suffered the same heartbreaking loss of her second baby in 2022. Zoo staff said Mujur was unable to care for her babies effectively, yet despite this, they bred her again.

When her third baby, Sibu Junior, was born in 2024, the cycle of loss continued. Unable to feed him, Mujur was separated from her newborn son just days after his birth. He was hand-reared by humans and sent to another zoo, where he too faces a lifetime in captivity.

Another baby lost. Another family torn apart. All because of captivity.

For orangutans, family is everything. In the wild, mothers spend almost a decade carrying, comforting, protecting and teaching their young, passing on the skills they need to survive. Mujur has been denied that chance. Three times.

Neither Mujur nor her son will ever be released into the wild. So how can this suffering ever be justified?

Help end this cycle of cruelty

Today, we’re asking you to support our Freedom Can’t Wait Summer Appeal to shine a light on the suffering captivity causes animals like Mujur - and help bring it to an end.

Mujur’s story is heartbreaking, but it isn’t unique. Across the UK, thousands of animals remain trapped in zoos, where families are broken apart, natural behaviours are denied and future generations are born only to spend their lives behind bars.

With your support, we can keep exposing the reality of captivity and pushing for lasting change.

Please make your gift by 14th August and help spare other animals from lives like Mujur’s.

MAKE YOUR KIND GIFT NOW

See how your gift could help

£5 - Could help equip activists with the resources they need to take action for animals in their communities

£10 - Can reach thousands more people with powerful social media campaigns exposing the reality of captivity

£25 - Could fund in-depth investigations that uncover the suffering of captive animals

£50 - Will help put evidence from our research in front of decision-makers to create lasting change

Thanks to compassionate supporters like you, we’ve already exposed hidden suffering in zoos, challenged those responsible and helped secure important victories, including the closure of Cumbria Safari Zoo and a breeding ban for Gentoo penguins at Sea Life centres in the UK.

But there is still so much more to do in the fight for animal freedom and to end the harm caused by captivity.

LEARN MORE ABOUT ZOOS

Every day that passes, more animals are denied the chance to live with their families and the lives they were meant to have. Together, we can keep shining a light on captivity, exposing suffering and fighting for a future where no wild animal is condemned to a lifetime behind bars.

If you can, please make a gift to our Freedom Can’t Wait Summer Appeal today. Your support will help expose hidden suffering in zoos through research, investigations and campaigns that challenge captivity and create lasting change.

Thank you for standing with animals like Mujur. Together, we can end this cycle of suffering. Because freedom can't wait.
