The Government announced today that a Bill will be brought forward to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in England. The Bill will affect animals such as camels, zebra and reindeer currently used in touring circuses. The long overdue ban looks set to be introduced before the licensing regulations expire in January 2020.

Maddy Taylor, Campaigns Officer commented

For over 60 years Freedom for Animals and our supporters have campaigned against animal circuses. To finally hear the news that the Government have introduced the long overdue Bill to ban the use of wild animals in circuses is such a relief. This ban will finally add England to the many other countries that have committed to banning wild animals in travelling circuses. It is such a joy to see all of the hard work of campaigners paying off and seeing UK bans come into force.

The Bill comes after decades of campaigning by Freedom for Animals and our supporters. Scotland and the Republic of Ireland have already joined the long list of countries that have committed to ban wild animals in circuses. Now, finally, England will introduce the Bill consigning the use of wild animals in circuses to the history books.
