On Saturday 29 November 2025, a reindeer escaped from a Christmas attraction in Formby, Merseyside - prompting a major emergency rescue operation that involved armed police, the Royal Marines, coastguard teams and the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust.

According to reports, the animal bolted the confines of their unnatural enclosure in a desperate bid for freedom, most likely to escape the loud and overwhelming crowds of people they were forced to endure for hours on end at the unnatural and stressful event.

From Facebook comments discussing the incident, someone even said:

We [was] there when it escaped! The staff wasn’t arsed! Kids all crying! Another reindeer bleeding from its antlers both in a 20sqm piece of fencing it was tight on them! No surprise they ran away.

The terrified reindeer was eventually located on Formby beach with thermal binoculars and a police drone, and quad bikes were then used to guide them toward the sand-dunes. A veterinarian, supported by the Royal Marines, was called in to sedate the animal, before they were forcibly returned to their captor - in this case, the business which uses them as if there were inanimate objects to be used as props for profit.

While it is of course fortunate that the reindeer was found unharmed, the incident is deeply concerning for so many reasons. Not only will it have caused the animal an unfathomable amount of stress for completely unethical and unnecessary reasons (as they would never have been put at such risk if not being exploited for human entertainment in the first place), the fact that dozens of emergency services had to be mobilised to capture the animal also risked public safety, the animal’s safety and exasperated taxpayers money. All because businesses across the UK think it’s acceptable to cart these innocent beings around the country for their own personal gain!

At Freedom for Animals, we believe this runaway reindeer’s desperate bid to escape their cruel captivity speaks volumes. No animal deserves to be treated this way, and they fight for their freedom every day.

Reindeer are especially sensitive individuals - forcing them to participate in festive events such as parades or grottoes, where they cannot hide from public view and are shoved into loud and busy environments, is a harmful practice that must come to an end. It is not surprising that the stress from confinement, transport and constant public exposure can easily lead to panic, fear, and in some cases, escape attempts, as we saw in Formby. It is sadly far from an isolated incident, and has even happened in the same area in the past!
